Clarinbridge Parish

Brief History of Clarinbridge Church

The old church was formerly a school of the Christian Brothers. By the 1930s, it was no longer adequate for the Parish. A new site was given, free of charge, by the Board of Health to Canon McHugh, Parish Priest. He engaged Ralph Byrne of W.H. Byrne, Dublin, as architect. The design of the new church is an adaptation of a simple form of Renaissance architecture.

The main entrance is approached through a colonaded portico of four Corinthian columns, carrying an impressive pediment. The main front is flanked by a bell tower, rising to 65 feet. The church seats 380 people.

The foundation stone was laid on 7 March by Monsignor Considine and the church was opened and blessed by Bishop Michael Browne on 26 June, 1938. The special sermon was preached by Dr. Duignan, Bishop of Clonfert.
