Under-14 Féile Hurling Final Clarinbridge 3-11 | Athenry 3-5 Loughrea was the perfect setting for a classic display of hurling from two perfectly prepared teams in this final of the Féile, on Monday evening. The level of skill, discipline and ability to score from play was a pleasure to watch. Clarinbridge went a point down in the first few minutes, but they quickly levelled and made Athenry play catch-up for fifteen minutes of the first half. Scores were level with four minutes to go, in the first half, when Clarinbridge goaled and quickly tagged on a point to leave the half-time score at 1-5 to 0-4. Normal service resumed in the second half, with great points being scored from the wings, and the centre men pounced to score two goals to leave Clarinbridge comfortably in front, with seven minutes remaining. Athenry, to their credit, did not throw in the towel; and scored three goals in quick succession. However, the fight back probably came too late. Clarinbridge held out to finish, and the sound of Referee, Gerry Larkin's whistle, was sweet music to the marvellous support in attendance. It would be an injustice to pick out any one player from the team for special mention, as this was the perfect team effort, from one to fifteen. The players' ability to strike first time on the ground, and to vary the play with lifting and striking, ensured that the ball moved quickly, with speed, and didn't allow the stronger players of the Athenry team, much time on the ball. Clarinbridge now goes on to the National Féile Finals in June, and they will be the Galway Ambassadors at this event, and well deserved of this honour. Much credit for this win goes to the team management for a well-prepared team, and, to the Juvenile Committee for their work, which is often done behind the scenes. |
