Celebration of Silver Jubilee of Pope's Visit to Galway

Galway Racecourse, Sunday, 30 October, at 3:00 pm. The Galway Race Committee wish to have a perpetual memorial of John Paul II's visit to Galway, and so, have commissioned a statue of the Holy Father, to be blessed during Mass at 3:00 pm, on 3 October. Mass will be concelebrated by the Western bishops and the Papal Nuncio. Bishop McLoughlin wants this event to be "not merely a commemoration, but also a reawakening and renewal of faith in each parish of the diocese". As the main emphasis in 1979 was on young people, the Bishop invites youth from every parish to attend, again, in 2004. Parishes are requested to assist on the day with personnel – stewards, ministers of the Eucharist, choirs [Clarinbridge Junior Choir being one of the selected choirs]. Practice for stewards, Eucharistic ministers, and acolytes takes place at 6:30 pm, on Thursday, 30 September, at the Racecourse. Please note:

  • there will be ample room for parking – all three entrances to the Racecourse will be open.
  • the stands will provide adequate shelter in the event of inclement weather
  • special provision is being made for wheelchairs and the elderly
  • there will be light refreshments on sale at the rear of the stand
  • some estimate of the number from this parish, who may intend to be present on the occasion, would be greatly appreciated. This information will have to be submitted to me [796208] by Tuesday, 28 September, at the very latest.
It would be appreciated if those going to Ballybrit would give me your names to pass on to the bishop. – E. Dermody.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament

Thursdays, in Clarinbridge church, 10:30 am to 5:30 pm. Julianne Forde and Mary Linnane are organising a rota to ensure that there will be a minimum of three persons always present. Even if you cannot give a full hour, you might manage half an hour. Please consider it if you are approached by the good ladies. Many have suggested that the main body of the church may be more suitable, instead of the "Nuns' Chapel". We will experiment with this idea for a few weeks. Please try to move nearer to the main altar if you are attending on Thursdays, rather than staying at the back of the church. – E. Dermody.

Parish Office

The new hours of opening are 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, Monday to Friday. I wish to thank Ann Bannon for her great work over the past three years in establishing the Parish Office, and organising it as it is today, and, always with a smile. Jackie Flanagan is the new Parish Secretary, and we hope she will be happy with us. Material for the Newsletter should be handed in by Wednesday evening. Please do not telephone such material. It must be in writing [and, check your spelling!]. – E. Dermody.

Parkinson's Association of Ireland

The Parkinson's Association of Ireland is hosting a patient information update meeting, on Sunday, 17 October, in the Corrib Great Southern Hotel, Galway. The purpose of this day is to provide a forum that will enable each attendee to listen to, and gather the most up-to-date information on all aspects of the management of Parkinson's disease. Whilst there are approximately 7,000 people in Ireland, today, with Parkinson's, many of these know very little about the condition itself, their rights and entitlements, or, indeed, very much about their medications. It is important that each and every person with this progressive, neurological condition actively participates in his treatment, and obtains whatever help he or she can, to enable them to live a complete life, as far as possible. This is a local event, and offers a great opportunity for people from the country to listen to their local experts, increase their understanding of the condition, and knowledge of the services available to them.
