Zambia Fund On Wednesday, 5 January, Alan Kerins will leave for Zambia, where he will voluntarily work as a physiotherapist in a Cheshire home, in a place called Monsu. At the moment, Alan is fundraising for basic medical supplies, equipment, and any other items of need in this poverty-stricken area. Suaimhneas "Suaimhneas" is a building situated beside the Parish Office in Clarinbridge. It consists of two large rooms – [a] meeting room, comprising three tables and twenty-five chairs. There are also kitchen facilities [with small fridge and hob] and a toilet. It is intended that this facility be used by various groups in the Parish. At the moment, the newly-formed Clarinbridge Choral Society rehearse there on Tuesday and Friday nights. The Clarinbridge Community Development Association meets there on Thursday nights. Please contact Fr. Dermody if you wish to use this facility [796208]. [b] A facility to accommodate parishioners, who suffer a bereavement. I am not happy with terms like "funeral parlour", "funeral home", etc. "Suaimhneas" is a more positive name – it means "rest", "peace", "tranquility", and, it covers both rooms. This building has been paid for by an interest-free loan from the Diocesan Fund "Meitheal". I wish to express sincere gratitude to Mr. Tom May, BE, the Diocesan Financial Controller, for all his help, plus, of course, the cash to finance this building. I feel it is an important addition to the Parish, and will be of great benefit to our community in the years ahead. Unfortunately, these facilities cost money! The original contract was for €183,000, but, a number of extras brought this to €195,000 – e.g. [1] new, retaining wall to support higher level, side walk-way to bungalow [2] side railing – health and safety reasons – beside Parish Office [3] additional tarmac for parking area to adjust levels [4] ESB and telecommunication cables all put underground [5] additional, adjusted roof-support steelwork, as required by Structural Engineer ... Total: €14,841. When VAT is added, and €4,000 contingency sum is subtracted, this comes to €195,000. Through the generosity of some parishioners, this €195,000 is already down to €185,000. Three families have given me €10,000, and I have added €1,000 myself. I'm very thankful, also, to those who have made valuable contributions by providing articles of furniture, e.g. the name-plate, "Suaimhneas", beautifully crafted in wood by Kevin Gill, the statue of the Risen Christ, fire extinguishers, and other articles of furniture by people who specialise in particular areas. Herewith, find a list of other pieces of furniture [with cost], which some people ]persons] or families might like to donate: four large seats – € 2,700, chairs – €1,361, curtains – €2,500, lighting – €519, fridge – €219, hob – €159, amplification [sound] – €1,402, delph, cutlery, glasses and tables – €780. You were most generous three years ago, when asked to contribute towards the cark park in Clarinbridge [we managed to add a bit in Roveagh, also, later], plus the Parish Office. In the coming week, each household will receive a dozen envelopes – one for each month in 2005. We would like to think [and, hope] that most families could afford €20 a month, but, if you cannot afford it, please give the contribution which you feel you can afford. Also, a number of people might prefer to give a cheque for the year, six months, or whatever. There may be others out there, who would like to help in a more substantial way, still, if you can afford it, by making a larger contribution, e.g. €1,000. It would be great, if we, as a community, could repay this loan in two years, or three, at the most. By putting our resources together, I feel this is possible. The good news is that I do not have plans for any more major projects in the future! Clarinbridge Choral Society The Clarinbridge Community Development Association invites you to an evening of Christmas carols, O'Carolan airs, and traditional music, featuring the newly-formed Clarinbridge Choral Group in the first-ever public performance. The Choir will be joined by harpist, Kathleen Loughnane [Dordán], Jacqueline and Marion McCarthy, Johnny Giles, and Tommy Keane [uileann pipes, flute, concertina, whistle], as well as John Quinn [RTÉ], who will be lending his voice to do some seasonal readings.
