Mothers' Day Various strands make up Mothers' Day. It was the occasion of visiting the cathedral or mother church. It was a day for servants to go home to visit their mothers before Easter. The day was placed on the calendar as a memorial day for mothers, wearing a red carnation if one's mother was alive, or white if she was dead. It was also Mothers' Day for peace. |

Trócaire The focus this Lent is on Ethiopia, and, each week, we hope to furnish you with various bits of information on this unfortunate country, e.g. In 46 countries, people are poorer today than in 1990. According to the UN, Ethiopia is one of the top five countries with the highest human poverty level, with over 50% of the population living on less than $1 a day. A child born in Ethiopia in 2002 has a life expectancy of 45.5 years. In Ethiopia, 76% of the population do not have guaranteed access to clean water, and 88% are without sustainable access to improved sanitation. Developed nations make up 20% of the world's population, but consume 86% of the world's resources. During the drought and famine in Ethiopia in 1985, nearly one million people died. |
